Day 3 in Costa Rica

This morning all of the students met at 7:30 a.m. in the common area of Cabinas Cecilia. We boarded a mini van to drive to the local school that we were working at yesterday. Once we arrived at the school, we had a local breakfast in the school's cafeteria and the food we had is called Pinto (rice, beans, and spices) and Plantanos (fried plantains) with grape juice (real grapes!). Soon after us Pingrians ate breakfast, we had a tour of the school. There was a lot of work put into the school but there is still work that we can do. This shows how fortunate Pingry students are and that we should appreciate what we have. Once we finished the tour, we played with the children who had a break in their school day. We went on the swings and the monkey bar with them. After a couple minutes, their break was over and us Pingry students could work on improving the school. The school we visited needed a fence around their property to prevent injuries to the children if they go into the woods and more. Each of us needed to dig a 70 cm hole that would be able to put a metal pole in to help the building of the fence. Once most of us finished digging, cement was needed to keep the poles in place. Some of us volunteered to make the cement to be poured in the holes with poles. We had to mix cement rocks with water. Then we joined the rest of the Pingry students again. Once everyone was finished with their work, we went back to the cafeteria where the cook, Martha, makes the best ice cream like dessert called Apretado. She makes many favors of the dessert including strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, and more. After we finished eating, we changed into our bathing suits in the bathroom and loaded the vehicles to go to the waterfall. Once we all arrived at the waterfall, we took turns repelling down the waterfall. As the last few people were going, it began to pour, soaking everyone. After everyone finished we headed out back to the van, a kilometer away.  We returned to the cabins to quickly change before going to Rafa's house for a late lunch of rice with chicken, beans, and salad. Following lunch, we had a scavenger type race in the town, where we needed to collect pictures and information from around the town. We then returned to the cabins for free time to play cards and shower until dinner, which was quickly followed by the anchor. Tomorrow we have our first experiences with our homestay families.

Thank you for the detailed reports. The experience the students have from the trip cannot be obtained from the classroom. It will benefit them for a lifetime. The daily review of the report and seeing James in the picture is becoming something we look forward to. Thank you!
